Respectfully, Read The Room.

Yo!!!

The ‘Gen Z’ and woke generation versus cultural orientation and application has been everywhere since yesterday. And while I’m not exactly one to jump on trendy topics, in fact, I never intended to until now. Did you ask why?

So a thought just hit me, about a minute ago, at 5.32am on 21st August, 2026, and it made me rush to my notepad…

While I’ve had the conversation extensively with my girl and my man (don’t be distracted, stay focused), I just remembered I’ve been where the young lady is (I’m a young lady too, but, I believe you get the gist…)

When I first joined 9-5, I thought the elderly and those at the peak of their career truly didn’t want to feel old, especially since there are a lot of younger ones in the workplace, while the elderly ones were more of the managers. So, maybe they wanted to feel included and the first-name basis was their means of achieving that, you get? And why would I want my ‘ogas’ (that means bosses) to feel that way? (Old and uncomfortable, that is.) So, yes, maybe I jumped on the ‘first name train’ too.

Of course, some gave us their nicknames to work with, yeah (similar to Mr. Elumelu’s preference for TOE over his first name), and that made it easier for us from the ‘respect your adults’ background (even the nickname sef dey be one kind sometimes, just accept the ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’).

…back to my goof.

There was a senior colleague that I liked, pretty-faced, classy, and all, so I chose to call her ‘babe’ (multiple lol). Putting it in context, senior colleagues are usually people on the same role as you, not necessarily your team lead, but of course, you met them on the job.

I was called out immediately; she said she’s a mother and I’m calling her babe. Over 3 years in and she’s now my person person, a very sweet, lovely and lovable human. But did I learn that? I clocked it in no time abeg.

Trust me when I say, I’m one to address supervisors and managers with all respect and all. I can’t even call our drivers by their names without a ‘Mr.’, much more…

…even though some would give you a query for using ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’ for them. Later, I even realized ‘Ma’ has an aging undertone or something, so ‘Ma’am’ is preferred. LOL. Ever since, I’ve been ‘Ma’am-ing’ every adult female, I want peace.

Is the corporate world in Africa, especially Nigeria, a joke to you?

I used to beat myself up when I sent absent-minded emails, using a first name instead of the ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’, but then some drag you and you just use the first name for some and not for some, even though you wouldn’t address any of them by their first name in person.

All of this is to say, there is no ‘one size fits all’. I think it’s more of ‘read the room’ and know what applies per time, and in what space.

However, in the words of a few comments I’ve seen, the respect thing never misses; let them be the ones to ask you to drop it.

Recently came across a video that said most people of colour have a colonization history that once demeaned their humanity. And in more recent times, many have had to struggle to achieve, to be, whatever it is they currently are. Hence, we mostly have a lot to prove; the accumulation of materials, the demand for respect and all, so…

So, let our elders and people at the peak of their careers have all the respect they want and, in many cases, have earned!!!

Did you get that?

Please tell me you did 🌚

Also, tell me you caught the pun in the title? 🌚

Okay, bye!!!

Iyanuoluwa Araba.

A New Dawn Is Here

Hyhyhy! Hello lovelies. So I've had this page on for, 3 years now right? And it's been idle ever since. I agree, I've been lazy, giving the poor state of my phone for an excuse. I must tell you I'm still using the phone, lol. So, I want to get the page active again, you know this fire refueled. But then, I need our encouragements. Please drop your comments on articles dropped and make sure to refer them to your friends and friends. We don't do enemies right? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Although, there might be a little edition in the page title, or should I say diversion in contents. Actually, it was me all crazy about poems when setting up the page, but then, growth comes with a new kind of focus and determination you know. So we will be having more of gender activism, not just narrowed down to feminism, but also treating the few cases of male child abuse as they come in focus, God helping me. Maybe a few poems or motivations at times, and of course, we continually bring ourselves ...

Virginity is really no biggie afterall; it isn't the icing, let alone the cake πŸ’πŸ’

...since I already took permission to 'just write' and I believe I've been granted the permit (read my apologies - previous post, for better understanding), LET'S DIG! YAY!!!πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒ As I was saying, virginity or abstinence is really no biggie you know? Hold up, sip water, I'll break it down, let's journey... (Errm, so I realize some of my audience aren't just Nigerians, let alone Yorubas, but please try and follow, I'll make sure not to lose you πŸ’–πŸ’– I'll be making a few references to Yorubas. Some might even be similar to what you have around you...) ...so, I know some Yoruba gods and goddesses demand their worship done (or sacrifices carried) by just virgins just because these gods love purity. So, to start with, I'll say virginity is more about consecration. Did you know occultists demand 'virginity' in order to keep their powers safe and intact; potent. This time, more of abstinence or they are said to have committed a sacrile...

What exactly defines manhood?

Hello! Welcome back 😊 So, earlier this month, I was having an outpour of anger on one of my social media accounts, my WhatsApp status to be precise, so much that a friend had to call me to check, saying I'm a borderline sexist. Lol! You can imagine how much I vexed so much that I was called to check πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ But then, like I later shared with another friend, I was throwing shades on the menfolk 'cos of younger men. Imagine a father, one of those 'I'm the man' diehards; he wouldn't mind going naked so you know he is masculine, pff! A widower! You wouldn't want to imagine how much he squanders his wife's investments after her demise. This same woman was the breadwinner of the family while alive, doing everything to give her family the best, not excluding her husband, still... Now, even at her death, he couldn't hold up for 6months. The children are thrown out of school. He's after asses... Lots to his credit. But he's the man! And the wife...
